Why Mosquitoes Bites Itch
When a mosquito bites a person, it injects a small amount of saliva into the skin. The saliva contains proteins that can trigger an immune response in the body, causing inflammation and the sensation of itching.
The immune system recognizes the proteins in the mosquito’s saliva as foreign substances and releases histamine, a chemical that helps to protect the body from infection and inflammation. Histamine causes blood vessels to dilate and become more permeable, allowing immune cells to reach the site of the bite and remove the foreign substances. This process can cause swelling, redness, and itching at the bite site.
In addition to the immune response, the mosquito’s saliva also contains enzymes that help the mosquito to extract blood from the host. These enzymes can also contribute to the itching sensation.
Everyone reacts differently to mosquito bites, and some people may experience more severe reactions than others. Some people may be more prone to developing itchy mosquito bites due to their genetics or due to underlying allergies or sensitivities.

To treat mosquito bites, follow these steps:
- Wash the bite with soap and water to help prevent infection.
- Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the bite to help reduce swelling and itchiness.
- Use over-the-counter anti-itch cream or calamine lotion to help alleviate the itching.
- If the bite is particularly itchy or painful, you can take an antihistamine to help reduce the symptoms.
- Avoid scratching the bite, as this can increase the risk of infection and make the symptoms worse.
- If you experience severe allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, or other serious symptoms after being bitten by a mosquito, seek medical attention immediately.
It’s also a good idea to take steps to prevent mosquito bites in the first place. This includes using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and staying indoors during peak mosquito hours (dawn and dusk).
